Large Portion of Illegal Mosque Razed. The Fight For the Rest Continued

Muhammadi Jama Masjid in Y Block, Mangolpuri, Delhi, has encroached upon 1,337 sq. metres of government land. While a large portion has been razed, approximately 550 sq. metres of the structure remain standing.

That is because the mosque committee claims that 400 sq. yards of land was allotted to it by the DDA Slum Department in 1984, but they have failed to prove the validity of this allotment.

Recorded outcome and next steps

Delhi High Court had earlier directed the removal of the illegal portions within one month and subsequently ordered the DDA and DUSIB to clarify within 30 days whether the remaining land had been allotted to the committee. The government counsel has so far failed to bring crucial information, including the RTI record and departmental history, adequately to the court's attention. The remaining structure continues to stand and the legal fight continues.
