Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation has moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over an incident reported this week at an examination centre in Karnataka where nose rings worn by women students were taped.

The exam was Common Entrance Test (CET) and the venue was Malnad Education Society  (MES) College, Chikkamagaluru.

Women students were made to cover nose rings with adhesive tape as a condition for entry into examination hall.

The said incident took place on April 23. Reports say that hundreds of students were subjected to this practice.

In their complaint, the Foundation has raised concerns over application of adhesive tape on faces of students at a state-administered examination centre, stating that such action raises serious questions relating to bodily integrity and dignity.

The Foundation, which is a welfare arm of Rashtra Jyoti, has urged NHRC to take cognisance and call for a report from Karnataka Examinations Authority and concerned authorities regarding the incident, personnel involved and action taken.

The Foundation has also sought clarification on rule or instruction under which adhesive tape was applied to students, and its legal basis, if any.

Further, it has requested appropriate medical and legal relief for affected students.

Complaint also calls for issuance of clear written guidelines for future examinations.
