Gems of Bollywood (GoB), the hugely popular movement known for exposing anti-Hindu and socially harmful content in the entertainment industry, has formally filed a complaint to national authorities and human rights bodies regarding the Netflix series The Ba**ds of Bollywood.
The complaint highlights how Season 1, Episode 7 of the series openly violates Indian law by showing actor Ranbir Kapoor stylishly smoking a banned e-cigarette in front of filmmaker Karan Johar between the 27:23 to 28:21 minute mark, wothout any disclaimer whatsoever.
Why This Is Serious
- Violation of Law
- The Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, bans e-cigarettes across India over their harmful health effects.
- By glamorising e-cigarette use, the actors, producers and Netflix have committed an offence under this Act, in addition to possible violations under IPC and IT Act provisions.
- Harm to Children & Society
- Netflix is widely accessed by adolescents. Such depictions normalize drug/substance use and erode public morality and health.
- It undermines the constitutional duty under Article 21 (Right to Life with Dignity & Health) and Article 39(f) to protect children from harmful influences.
- Mockery of Enforcement
- In another episode, the series trivialises the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), further damaging public faith in law enforcement.
- Deeply Contradictory Messaging
- Ranbir Kapoor, a bollywood celebrity who is officially cast as Lord Ram in the upcoming high-budget Ramayana film, is simultaneously shown promoting a banned substance, undermining the dignity of the widely revered deity.
- This contradiction sends a corrosive message to society and especially to impressionable youth.
Reliefs Sought
GoB has demanded:
- Registration of a case against Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar, director Aryan Khan, producers and Netflix.
- Immediate removal of objectionable content from the platform.
- Directions for strict compliance mechanisms by streaming services.
- Accountability of Bollywood celebrities repeatedly glamorising drugs, alcohol, and banned products.
Gems of Bollywood has called upon the authorities to set a strict example, safeguard children’s rights and hold the entertainment industry accountable.
